The Hackbrett (hammered dulcimer) as one of the oldest instruments is played amongst many people’s traditional music everywhere in the world.
Roland Schiltknecht started many years ago to detach the alpine Hackbrett from its traditional role in popular music. In doing so, new relations appeared. Schiltknecht combines archaic elements of popular music with elements of jazz and rock.
Meeting persian santur player Alan Koushan brought a dialogue with the 2000 year old ‘root’-form of the alpine Hackbrett. The Hackbrett reached the alpine region in the middle-ages via the orient.

Roland Schiltknecht and Alan Koushan played together for the first time in 1987 within a joint venture at the Berlin Jazz Festival.
Koushan is a master of the persian santur and has played in many crossover project (notably with Peter Gigers “family of percussion”).

Schiltknecht lives in the eastern alpregion of Switzerland. In the early eighties he founded with his brother the folk-rock ensemble “Schildpatt”. He played at various festivals such as Montreux, Zürich, Berlin , Sidney and Miami as well as at the worldexibitions of Tsukuba (Japan) und Sevilla. Countless participations as session player such as on the “Peeni Waali” albums.
